Batman #18 8/10

I feel like this issue was both a success and a failure in what it was trying to do. It was a success in showing us how bad a place Bruce was in, and in helping us get to know Harper Row and her brother more, but it failed in that unless you follow the greater comics media you don't know why Bruce is in such a bad place. At the end of Batman #17 his supporting cast is avoiding him but they're all very much alive. At the start of Batman #18 his son and one time Robin is dead. If all you get is Batman and somehow avoided the non-stop flow of spoilers then there is a pretty strong disconnect between the end and starting points of the issues. As for the issue itself, I feel like this is a return to form for Snyder after the meandering Death of the Family. He's obviously got big plans for Harper Row but they're going to be going on the back burner soon for the year zero storyline.

The End Times of Bram and Ben #3 9/10

This book is so much fun. Newly cleansed of sin Ben goes to try to stop Bram from his attempt at being the Antichrist but man, the list of no-nos for staying clean of sin are really restrictive. The Angels, who all clearly have no idea what people are like at all invade Burning Bram and begin to slaughter the sinners, and then we get to go meet to real Antichrist. Well, Antichrists. And I love who they are. Every page is packed with great jokes and the art by Rem Broo is kinetic and fun. I can't recommend this one enough, and the back issues are already down to $1.99 on ComiXology. Check it out.


The Manhattan Projects #10 7/10

In this issue we finally get the fill in artist that is supposed to help get Nick Pitarra back on track. The fill in, Ryan Browne, is doing his best Pitarra impersonation here and its serviceable. I feel like we could have had an artist that was more of a departure from Pitarra for this issue as it was set in the murderous Oppenheimer's mind. We've got the start of the Oppenheimer Civil War that is likely going to lead to the "amalgamated Oppenheimer" that was referenced in Feynman's journal from the first issue. We get to see the extremely chaotic mindscape of the murderous Oppenheimer in which new Oppenheimers are spawned with a thought and then go about making him into even more of a psychopath. One thing though, if you think Scott Snyder hates horses wait till you read this one.

Thor: God of Thunder #6 5/10

The history of Gor is pretty generic. Good guy Gor lives on a dying world. His mother was pious and the gods never answered his prayers. His family dies in a series of tragic but likely preventable ways. Then he finds two Gods that have fallen from the skies, takes the weapons from the dark one and uses it to kill the golden one. Then he gets to work butchering across the universe thanks to his new God weapon that seems a lot like the symbiote from Spider-Man. There's nothing we haven't seen before here and we could have probably guessed most of it based on what we've seen of Gor in the last 5 issues. A few hundred years in the mines did do wonders for Volstagg's weight problem though. He was looking good.

I'm going to do something a little different this week. Instead of  posting my thoughts on the books now I'm going to try and do some mini-reviews of them on Thursday or Friday. I'll see how that works out and that may be the format moving forward.

Comics for the Week of 2/13/2013

Dark Horse

BPRD: Hell on Earth: Abyss Time #2 - I have a bad habit of falling behind on BPRD. I tend to read it in 3 or 4 issue installments. The last part I read was the final issue of The Return of the Master. I had a feeling it wasn't Rasputin. He seemed too obvious and Mingola had talked about how his story was over before.

Star Wars #2 - The first issue was good even with the whole Leia as a pilot thing. I don't have a problem with the concept, just that we've never seen her fly anything before then. It felt out of place. Darth Vader the office bitch was more then enough to make up for it though.

DC Comics

Batman #17 - So its Jason Todd's face, right?

Bedlam #4 - This comic just gets freakier and freakier. The last issue had anatomically correct angels and serial killer art. I'm curious how Spencer is going to writer Madder out of his impending arrest. I really hope it won't be a cop out.

Fatale #12 - Another of the Done in One issues for Brubaker And Phillips' Horror Noir series. The last issue with the man, his mother and elder gods was my favorite of the series so far. If Brubaker can keep delivering that kind of quality then I'm really looking forward to the back half of this series.

The End Times of Bram and Ben #2 - I picked up #1 a few weeks ago after seeing some pretty good reviews and I was glad I did. This was a really fun comic about an average guy who accidentally gets taken to heaven in The Rapture then is sent back. Everyone else just carries on as usual because not enough people ascended for it to be obvious, all they know is that there were some mysterious disappearances. And they flat out deny the idea that it could have been the Rapture.

The Manhattan Projects #9 - We're supposed to find out the plans of a lot of the players in this issue. I'm most intrigued by Alternate Einstein. We know he's a son of a bitch but I'd really like to find out how much of one he is. Thinking about it I'd like a little more character work out of this series overall. We're getting big, bold strokes but its all moving very fast with very little time spent on the player.

Marvel

Cable and the X-Force #4 - I wouldn't be reading this if my roommate wasn't buying it. Its not particularly bad, but its not particularly good either. I do like the cast as I've always thought Forge had a lot of potential as a character. And Dr. Nemesis is always fun.

Uncanny X-Men #1 - Brian Michael Bendis is a real mixed bag when it comes to superhero comics. He's written one of the best runs in modern comics with his Daredevil but he's also written some god awful team books in his run. So far his All-New X-Men has been surprisingly good. I'm hoping that carries over into Uncanny.

Wolverine and the X-Men #25 - Now this book I might have to start getting myself if my roommate ever stops. Its got everything I want in an X-title, a big messy cast, random connections to other comics, and my boy Quentin Quire. And it even look like Broo is up and about. Even if he is a bit... hungry.
